Need Help?
FAQs
Frequently asked questions to put your mind at ease.
What should I expect at my first appointment?
Please arrive 15 minutes early to complete registration. Bring any referral letters, previous test results, and a list of your current medications. During the consultation, we’ll discuss your symptoms and medical history, conduct any necessary examinations, and outline a clear plan for further investigations or treatment.
Do I need a referral?
A referral from your GP or another healthcare professional is often helpful and may be required by your insurer. However, self-referrals are accepted for many conditions. If you’re unsure, please contact us or check with your insurance provider.
Which insurance companies do you work with?
We are registered with major UK health insurers, including BUPA, AXA, Allianz, Aviva, Vitality, Cigna, Healix and WPA. If your provider isn’t listed, please contact us to confirm coverage.
Where can I make an appointment?
All appointments are currently held at Spire Leeds Hospital. You can book directly online or by phone through the Spire Leeds website here.
Is Robotic Surgery available privately?
Yes!
Since mid 2026, we are now able to offer robotic kidney surgery in the private sector at Spire Leeds Hospital. We can offer Robotic Partial Nephrectomy, Radical Nephrectomy, Pyeloplasty, Nephro-ureterectom via the retroperitoneal or transperitoneal approach tailored to the needs of the patient.
What is retroperitoneal kidney surgery?
Retroperitoneal kidney surgery allows the kidney to be accessed from the back, rather than going through the abdominal cavity (transperitoneal). This means the bowel is avoided, which can lead to less pain, a quicker recovery, and a shorter hospital stay. It is particularly useful for patients with previous operations and smaller kidney tumours. Not all centres offer this approach, and choosing between retroperitoneal and the more traditional transperitoneal route depends on the individual patient and the nature of the condition.
How do I decide which prostate (BPH) operation is right for me?
There are several effective treatments for an enlarged prostate, ranging from minimally invasive treatments to more established surgical options. The best choice depends on factors such as prostate size, your symptoms, overall health, and your priorities (for example, preserving ejaculation or achieving the most durable outcome).
During your consultation, we will go through the suitable options in detail and tailor the approach to you. You may find it helpful to review this summary table which summarises each treatment and supports shared decision-making.
There is no single “best” operation — only the one that best fits:
- Your prostate size
- Your symptoms
- Your priorities (e.g. ejaculation vs durability)
- Your overall health
These options will be discussed in detail during your consultation to arrive at a personalised plan.
Which BPH operations are you able to offer at present?
Currently, we can offer standard TURP and Urolift.
We are working hard to be able to offer HoLEP soon, however at present this is only available in the NHS regionally or you would be referred further afield if you wish to have this privately.
For aqua-ablation and rezum, we would refer you to colleagues in the region.
For PAE, this is not offered privately in our region and would be best referred to be done in the NHS.
What are the fees?
A new outpatient consultation is £220, and follow-up appointments are £150. Costs for diagnostic tests and treatments vary depending on the procedure and setting, but you will be informed of all prices in advance of any investigations or treatments.
Can video or telephone consultations be offered?
Yes, video and telephone consultations are available for suitable cases, particularly for follow-ups or initial advice. These can be arranged depending on your preference and clinical need.
What happens if I need a follow-up?
If further review is needed, a follow-up appointment can be arranged to discuss test results, monitor your condition, or plan ongoing treatment. This can be scheduled directly with my personal assistant (PA) to ensure continuity of care.
What happens if I need an operation?
If surgery is recommended, we will discuss all available options, including benefits, risks, and recovery. Most procedures will require a pre-assessment, and depending on the type of surgery, an overnight stay may be necessary. All arrangements will be coordinated to ensure a smooth experience.
What happens if I need to cancel my appointment?
If you need to cancel or reschedule, please notify Spire Leeds Hospital as soon as possible. Cancellations made more than 24 hours in advance are eligible for a full refund. However, cancellations within 24 hours or non-attendance may result in a lost fee.
