Frequently asked questions
Is prostatitis the same as an enlarged prostate?
No. Prostatitis is inflammation, while an enlarged prostate (BPH) is benign growth. Both can cause urinary symptoms, so an assessment helps tell them apart.
Is prostatitis a sign of cancer?
Not usually. Prostate cancer and prostatitis can share some symptoms, but they are different conditions. If your PSA is raised, a separate assessment is offered.
How is it treated?
Options include antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication and supportive care. Which combination suits you depends on whether it is acute or chronic.
When is it urgent?
Fever with urinary symptoms, or being unable to pass urine, needs urgent medical attention rather than a routine appointment.
Can I self-refer?
Yes, self-referral is accepted for many conditions. Some insurers want a GP referral first, so it is worth checking before you book.
