PUJ Obstruction & Robotic Pyeloplasty

Minimally invasive reconstruction where the kidney meets the ureter.
PUJ Obstruction & Robotic Pyeloplasty

A narrowing that stops the kidney draining

The pelvi-ureteric junction (PUJ) is where the kidney joins the ureter. A narrowing here leads to poor drainage and swelling. It can be corrected with minimally invasive or robotic surgery to restore normal urine flow and protect the kidney.

  • Narrowing where kidney meets ureter
  • Causes poor drainage and swelling
  • Corrected by robotic pyeloplasty
  • Aim: restore flow, protect the kidney

Assessment and reconstruction

01

Assessment: Scans and kidney function tests guide the plan.

02

Robotic pyeloplasty: Repairs the narrowing to restore drainage.

03

Ureteric reconstruction: Also carried out for ureteric strictures.

04

Recovery and follow-up: Typical stay 1–2 nights; return to normal activity over about 4–6 weeks, as for robotic kidney surgery. Individual results vary.

Why see Mr Aldiwani for robotic pyeloplasty?

Mr Aldiwani completed a Royal College of Surgeons-accredited fellowship in robotic retroperitoneal kidney surgery at Frimley Renal Cancer Centre. Private robotic surgery has been available in Leeds since mid-2026.

  • 2022: robotic fellowship
  • 1–2: nights typical hospital stay
  • 4–6: weeks typical return to normal activity

Frequently asked questions

What is a pyeloplasty?

It is an operation that repairs a narrowing where the kidney meets the ureter, so urine can drain normally. Mr Aldiwani performs it with the da Vinci robot.

The robot allows precise reconstruction through small incisions. Robotic surgery generally means smaller scars and quicker recovery than open surgery, though the right approach depends on you.

Patients typically stay 1 or 2 nights after robotic kidney surgery. Your own plan is confirmed at consultation.

Yes. Bring scan reports and, if you can, the images. Mr Aldiwani can advise on whether robotic reconstruction is suitable.

Yes. Since mid-2026 private robotic surgery has been available at Spire Leeds Hospital. Suitability depends on your scans, diagnosis and health.
